drought dressing

26 Jan

drought dressing / longleggedlady.comSince it feels like summer, I decided to go ahead and dress the part.  This perfectly flimsy, filmy Reformation tee shirt is my first spring purchase, and I’m totally in love.  It’s like wearing a cloud.  The [Jil Sander knockoff] skirt was a Zara clearance steal I picked up last year.  I’m not crazy about wearing light colors from head to toe, so I like to anchor outfits like this with dark shoes and accessories.

when to fake leather

19 Jan

when to fake leather / longleggedlady.comIt’s birthday weekend.  Derrick and two of our closest friends all turned twenty-something, so we went out Friday and painted the town red, then spent Saturday sunbathing in the park.  Today we’re being as lazy as possible, and tonight I’m taking Derrick out for a fancy birthday dinner.

My “lazy as possible” look is pretty basic:  biggest sweater I own + sneakers.  For awhile, I was obsessed with getting a pair of real leather pants, but I went with these coated jeans by AG instead.  In retrospect, I’m glad.  As much as I love the leather-look for pants, I find I can only wear them so often.  These are perfect for adding a more interesting texture to an otherwise basic outfit, and they didn’t cost me a month’s rent.  Actual leather would’ve been a waste of money and cow.

In other news, the lovely Sarah from Sarah’s Ambitions nominated me for the Liebster Award.  If you aren’t already familiar with her blog, you need to check it out.  She’s got cool, ladylike-professional style down to an art.  Here are my answers to her questions:

1. How would you describe your style?
2. What are your favorite brands and collections?
Rag & Bone and Alexander Wang are two I drool over constantly.  There’s also this brand out of LA called L’Ecole Des Femmes, I ran across it at Project Las Vegas about a year ago, and I’ve been in love with it ever since.  It’s naughty-French-schoolgirl-inspired clothing.  Very crisp, sexy, and monochromatic- all things I adore.
3. What is your #1 goal for this year?
Aside from career stuff, I’d like to get a good indoor garden going. Right now I have several plants, but I want to grow my own herbs and have a little lemon tree.
4. Where did you grow up, where do you live now, and where do want to live in ten years?
I grew up in small town Nebraska, and I’m in San Francisco now. In ten years? That’s tough. I could be happy here, but I’d also love to live abroad again at some point. Can I just say I’d like to be off somewhere in a big, romantic city?
5. What is your favorite aspirational style blog?
I LOVE 12:04. Beautiful photos, flawless style.
6. Five things you’d pack for a trip to Paris fashion week:
A white shirtdress, a leather skirt, my Senso boots, half a dozen vintage scarves (I’m counting these as one thing), and a printed blazer.
7. What was the last book you read?
We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. It’s like, the mother of all dystopian novels.
8. If you could learn another language, what would it be?
Arabic. My bf studied it and I’m so jealous.
9. Big night out, you can only choose one: eyeliner or lipstick?
Eyeliner. I’m not responsible enough for lipstick, I get it everywhere.
10. Trend you never tried but kind of wish you had?
I’m still working on boyfriend fit pants in general. Somehow they never seem quite right on me, but I love them on other girls.
11. What skill would you like to learn or develop?
I’d like to be able to sew well enough to make some clothing and do basic alterations. I spend all my money at the tailor these days.

fool proof

22 Dec

fool proof / longleggedlady.comThis is probably one of the simplest, most universally flattering looks a girl can wear.  A-line mini dress + simple bag w/ silk scarf + any old shoes you please.  You can’t go wrong.

Side note:  I try not to be the kind of California transplant who gloats incessantly about how rad the weather is, but guys, I’m wearing a mini dress in December.  That never stops being awesome.

that one dress I always forget about

21 Dec

longleggedlady.comThis dress is one of those pieces that somehow always winds up forgotten in the back of my closet, then gets rediscovered every few months when I clean.  I love it because a) it has a pussy bow, and therefore gives me the opportunity to say “pussy bow,” and b) the dotted print is perfect- not too large, and not too close together.   I’m picky about dots.

borrowed | longleggedlady.comI treat Derrick’s closet like an extension of my own.  Lately I’ve been stealing this hoodie from him almost daily, it’s just oversized enough, and the sleeves are so long I can pull them all the way over my hands (since I continually forget to buy gloves).  Perfect for layering.

The trip to Omaha was perfect.  I got to spend loads of time with my family and Omaha friends, met my 10 month old second cousin for the first time, spoiled my parents’ dog, treasure hunted in one of my favorite vintage shops, and froze my bum off in the snow.  I also my tried on my first rounds of wedding dresses, and it was extremely overwhelming.  I fell in love with everything and bought nothing.

lazy days

3 Dec

lazy days | longleggedlady.comThis is my default outfit when I can’t think of anything to wear.  I know the Zara skort has been on virtually every style blog in existence, but sometimes guys, things get popular for a reason.  It’s flattering and it goes with anything.  I can’t stop wearing it.

We’ve reached that frustrating phase of winter where I get really restless, but sort of apathetic at the same time.  The days are just too short.  I’m battling it by staying active and creative as much as possible.  Shooting with Asher Moss last week was perfect.  He’s the kind of photographer who knows exactly what he’s looking for, and it makes shooting so easy and fluid.  Plus he’s just fun to hang out with.  He has this perfect, eyes-completely-open awareness and appreciation for everything around him.  I could listen to him talk about all his adventures for days.  If you’re not familiar with his work, check it out, and maybe donate a little to his project.

Amatoria Organic TeeAmatoria Organic Tee | long legged ladyLong live the tuxedo stripe.  I love love love this trend.  It automatically makes any pair of pants 10x more interesting.  This particular pair were another of my Ebay steals.  They’re a size too large for me, but the price was so good that I bought them anyway with the intention of getting them altered.  However, now that I have them, I sort of like the looser fit.  Perhaps my days of worshipping painted-on skinny pants are coming to an end?  Doubtful.

My tee shirt is Amatoria (told you I was obsessed).  It’s incredibly soft, and fits perfect because it’s made to order, so I was able to specify my measurements.  I’m a bit of a tee shirt collector, and am occasionally guilty of splurging on expensive designer ones.  I won’t name names, but Amatoria is definitely better quality than a few of the pricier brands out there.  Oh, and she’ll customize the design on the front, so you can change the word or select a different fabric for the lettering.
